Day 28: Triacastela - Sarria
Today’s stats: 16 miles/1000 ft elevation. Friends United.
We made it to Sarria. Little moments of joy everywhere.
Again, we took the longer Camino Alternativo (25 km vs. 17 km) to visit the monastery in Samos. Every extra mile was totally worth it! We are so blessed to have had the most amazing walk in a timeless and stunningly beautiful landscape of moss wrapped trees, colorful meadows, and secret corners. I kept looking around for fairies. I felt the magic all around me.
Simon and Garfunkel’s Andean musical tune, “If I Could”, kept playing in my head:
I’d rather be a forest than a street
I’d rather feel the earth beneath my feet
Yes, I would
If I could
I surely would
I believe the song has a deep meaning that’s dark and sad, but for me, “earth" underfoot is better than the asphalt of a "street,” and I definitely prefer the woods to the city. And although we’ve been walking for 28 days, I still feel I could walk forever.
And the wonderful thing is that I can, and we are still not done.
As magical as our day was, the highlight was meeting up with everyone in Sarria. There’s nothing quite like having friends around in a foreign country. And having dinner with a group of friends is the best. Friends truly elevate a good meal to a great one. Buen Camino!
