Day 30: Portomarín - Palas del Rey

Today’s stats: 16 miles/1500 ft elevation. A hiker who sings is a happy hiker.

The first part of the day was a gentle uphill while the second part of the day was mostly easy going through rolling country side. This day reminded me of walking the England Coast to Coast, passing through green farming communities. But today I was less aware of nature and more focused on the pure pleasure of socializing and sharing the trip with friends. The joy of hiking in good company is boundless.

I love being in nature. It’s where I feel a sense of calm and peace, of being alive. It’s also where I feel happiest. Hiking with friends while enjoying great conversations and laughter is one of my favorite activities. But I find that I need to make a conscious effort to stop every now and again and really pay attention to my surroundings, to consciously engage my senses to keep the connection to the natural world.

I was excited to go exploring around Palas de Rei, which was referred to as the Royal Palace in the early pilgrims’ guides. I was disappointed to discover there is little left of the town’s historic royal past.
Tomorrow will be a long day, about 28km to Arzua. Buen Camino!
