Day 31: Palas del Rey - Arzúa
Today’s stats: 18 miles/1800 ft elevation. The finest of pleasures are always the unexpected ones.
Today was a relatively easy day, apart from the length of the route. There weren’t any long steep accents or descents. The Spanish call this section the “leg breaker” for the length of this stretch. Again, we walked through Oak and Eucalyptus forest. And similar to the other days in Galicia, we passed through lots of small villages on our way.
They say that the Camino provides what you need. Today the Camino delivered big time. For the past couple of days, we were on the hunt for good ice cream. It started to feel like a goose chase until we found ourselves at the delightful Casa Alongos for lunch and saw ice cream on the menu. The lovely hostess took great pride in telling us about the farmer and the cows and the unique local flavors. We all shared the 3 flavors they had and continued on our way to the ice cream store where we were met by the local TV crew. I declare Borboriño the best ice cream on the Camino.
We took our time today and finally made it to Arzua at 5:30pm. It is the last large town we’ll pass through before Santiago.
We are staying at the lovely La Casona de Nené. We went to their sister establishment for dinner. We wanted a change from the usual Pilgrim's Menu, and we were not disappointed. I finished off with a chocolate dessert which was just perfect. I know, dessert twice a day - life is good!
Two more days. Buen Camino!
