Day 9: Nájera - Santo Domingo de la Calzada

Today’s stats: 14 miles/1400 ft elevation. Back to green fields and about 565 km to Santiago.

I am not too picky about accommodations as long as the place is clean, comfortable, and pleasant. But I feel our apartment last night and the hotel today are worth mentioning.

At Nájera, we stayed at a Lilliputian attic converted into a bedroom. The low ceiling set the tone for an intimate and romantic atmosphere. The problem was that neither one of us is particularly small, and we almost gave ourselves a concussion constantly banging our head on the low ceiling. This led to my decision to have breakfast in bed. Now, I am not a fan of breakfast in bed. In fact, I have never understood the concept. It sounds like a romantic notion, but for me, it's always been far more messy than relaxing. That is until today. It might be the beginning of a new life and many more breakfasts in bed. I get it now. It does make the morning so special.

In total contrast to our cozy modern apartment of yesterday, today we are staying at the Parador de Santo Domingo de la Calzada, which has a regal elegant style. It is set in a converted 12th-century hospital for the pilgrims. It features Gothic stone arches and beamed ceilings. I feel like royalty.
One of the most thrilling, yet challenging, experiences of the Camino is changing accommodations everyday - another night, another hotel. There is a huge range of accommodations on the Camino, and we’ve already heard some horror stories. It could be a nightmare.

I am so grateful to be sleeping in a nice room every night, amazing job so far! I’m excited to find out what the other 24 places would be. Buen Camino!
