Day 12: Atapuerca - Burgos
Today’s stats: 13.5 miles/900 ft elevation (+ some extra credit miles strolling around Burgos.) What a day!
I believed that I had conquered the rain. But today we got completely drenched, and it was miserable. When we started walking, it was misty and windy, but with no rain forecast for today, it was actually fun. That is until we got caught in a downpour without our rain gear and got soaked to the bone. I heard the woman behind me yelling: “Whoever pissed off Mother Nature, please apologize!”
The best quote of the day is the illustration of the pilgrim dreaming of the comfy sofa. When the going gets tough, the tough start dreaming ...
But I guess an apology was delivered and accepted because the sun came out as we were approaching Burgos. We took the alternate route along the river instead of the industrial way into the city. It was breathtaking!
Burgos is the old capital of Castile, and a picture book city. The great thing about Burgos is that it’s not just a pleasant place to stay but that it also has some spectacular sightseeing such as the Burgos Cathedral and the Lookout Castle. We had to take advantage and enjoy every minute here because the next big city, Leon, is eight days away. Buen Camino!
