From Resolutions to Achievement: When the Going Gets Tough

If you have been working on your new year’s resolution, or any goal for a while, you may need to add edge and staying power to your commitment to self. It is similar to running long distances. Success is achieved when runners keep going despite the aches and pains, and even when it’s not fun anymore. It’s about the determination to power through and find the small inspirations along the way to keep running, putting one foot in front of the other. The same applies to goal-achievement. Even the most inspired amongst us run out of steam sometimes. Maybe you’re exhausted, or feel as though your motivation has been depleted. The future seems cloudy with a chance of pain. The struggle is definitely real outweighing the potential benefits. Now might be the time to dig deeper and find the strength and determination to keep going until you achieve your desired outcome. This is your personal invite to turn the grind into greatness.

While a cliché, “embrace the grind” is truly the mindset that will put you on the path to success. To use another catchy slogan, “get your true grit to stay on that grind.” Grit is having the passion and perseverance to achieve your long-term and meaningful goals. It is the ability to deal with setbacks and make the most of what you have. It might seem like “the grind” is a negative state you’d wish to avoid. In truth, it is inevitable and imperative for success. The road to achievement is bumpy. The struggle is an unavoidable reality of the process. However, your attitude is a choice. It’s only natural to want things to be easy, but the growth is in the grind. The resounding themes are positivity and perseverance. When faced with difficulties, there’s a tendency to doubt the capacity to overcome them. But you are capable. Honor the pain but also your strength and your power. The challenges you face provide you with the opportunity to look within to explore the dimensions of your resilience and the depth of your character, and to cultivate your personal development.

The path of no resistance is desolate and barren. Nothing can grow there. Challenges, obstacles, and adversity are the equivalent of growth hormones stimulation to physical growth, but for spiritual growth and mental fortitude. However, you don’t realize the significance of the lessons learned when it happens, only in hindsight. Wisdom is gained after the fact. And it is work in progress. As you experience an “I hate my life” moment, remind yourself that’s it is normal. There will be many ups and downs along the self-actualization journey. Life is messy, painful at times. There will always be bumps in the road. We all have our own cross to bear. Nothing, and no one, is perfect. The grass is NEVER greener! The grind is about completing the tasks, small and large, that would help you accomplish your short- and long-term goals. It’s about purpose, focus, and determination. Embrace the grind with the intention of making yourself and your world better.

Always ask:

  1. What is the struggle inviting me to learn?

  2. How can I successfully overcome difficulties and setbacks?

  3. What are actionable ways to implement my new insights for new growth and impact?

Always remember:

  1. Obstacles needn’t stop you. They can actually propel you forward.

  2. Taking an alternative path is a viable option.

  3. Sometimes you may need to re-think your plan altogether.

Always recharge your motivation power:

  1. Ground yourself in the present. If you think of your life as a book, what’s the title of the current chapter?

  2. Acknowledge how far you have come and give yourself credit for all that you’ve accomplished in the previous chapters.

  3. Visualize the next chapter, especially the successes to come in great detail. Apply the “as if” principle. Start acting as if you already have what you want.

  4. List concrete problems you are now facing (not worries) looking at your challenges from a more distant perspective, as if you are an auditor making an informed assessment.

  5. Write down potential solutions for every problem, as if you are a highly paid consultant.

  6. Recognize where you may need help. The road to success is not meant to be lonely. Ask and you shall receive.

  7. Dig deep and reflect on how fortunate you are, unearth gratitude appreciating every good thing in your life.

  8. Help yourself by helping others. You get what you give. By motivating someone to keep going for his/her dream, and offering ideas on how to do so, you will become motivated.

  9. Get high on endorphins. Do things that give you energy, like a “runner’s high.” Find a way to get to your “happy place.”

  10. Rewire your brain with positive affirmations; for example: “by taking small steps consistently, I will see this through and will achieve my goal.”

When the going gets tough, go for a plot twist. You don’t need to have a whole plan lined out, just the first tiny step. After all, getting started with a fresh perspective is everything. This is true grit, to find the resolve to follow through and finish what you started. It may sound like you must be tough to persevere. Yet, the opposite may serve you better. Employ passion, patience, and compassion. You’d be better equipped to keep going when you experience hardship.
